I'm surprised at the core methodology, and quite frankly think it discounts the key benefit of a internet based news diet. "Rubel could do no clicking through to articles cited in the weblogs, only read what bloggers wrote." Additionally he says he purposefully avoided all other means of news consumption. This is no different than reading only the op/ed pages of a number of newspapers, and of course one would be left wanting. The power of an internet based news diet is at ones fingertips are the means to peruse instantly, all news, nearly all background and source info, and the incredibly diverse analysis thereof.
