« Oops | Main | Argh » May 26, 2004Follow the Bouncing Conflict-of-InterestSteven Forrest has an interesting post about ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers, a quasi-governmental non-profit agency that is supposed to oversee the technical functions of the Internet so it doesn't crash. Turns out the CEO of ICANN doesn't really work for ICANN. He works for ArgoPacific, an Australia-based tech incubator that he co-founded with Ira Magaziner. Who is Ira Magaziner? He's the former Clinton administration official who designed Hillary's Rube Goldbergian national healthcare plan. Oh, and Magaziner, according to Forrest, hepled create ICANN. Interesting facts, those, but Forrest wonders if there might be some big conflicts of interest inherrent in Argo essentially renting Twomey to ICANN. After all, Twomey remains a principal in Argo, and also is listed as CEO of an Internet privacy tech company that Twomey and Magaziner, via Argo, invested heavily in. Forrest asks if Argo's clients might include companies impacted by ICANN. If I'm running a company that feels it has been wronged by ICANN, or hampered in its growth, development or launch of new services, I've got to be wondering if ArgoPacific's client list might just include some of my competitors...Good point. While agreeing with you, the problem with stating this fact is that the alternative on the table is to hand the ICANN functions to CCITT i.e. the UN (who may take them anyway). This would not be an improvement. Posted by: Peter North at May 27, 2004 12:44 AMPost a comment
