Gay Marriage: A Reader Responds

A reader responded via email to my post yesterday on the impact that legalizing gay "marriage" will have on the freedom to practice Christianity in this country, and makes some predictions...

It is my observation that activists will use any weapon at hand to advance their cause and to damage their enemies.

"Intolerance" of "diversity" including "sexual orientation" will become a legally acceptable and publicly mandatory criterion for job evaluations, for assessing who gets custody of children, for determining whether parents can keep their kids or whether the state will remove them, for who gets government contracts. Private employers will have to assess using essentially the same approach, so they will be insulated from law suits and not employ people who present a litigation risk.

Intolerance of homosexuality may be defined as a sociopathic disorder
requiring therapy. It may even be defined as a mental illness requiring those who demonstrate it to be medicated.

And participating in a religion which is marked by "intolerance" will be used as a way assessing this factor, and will be found by courts to be a legitimate way to make the assessment. Welcome to the future.

I'd bet money on him being right.

Bill -

What kind of libertarian are you? You used to be against Big Government intervention. Now you are really worried that allowing some lesbians to get married will spoil your religion?

What kind of religion is so weak that gay marriage can threaten it?

You guys sound awfully insecure in your faith

Another qustion - I've noticed that most of the saber rattling on Iraq has died down recently on this site. You guys used to spend all day yelling about Iraq. What happened?

With all the conflict in Iraq why are you wasting your time worrying about gay marriage?

Why not discuss solutions to the 80% disapproval rating that our soldiers are facing in Iraq?

Why not discuss solutions to the 80% disappraoval rating that our soliders are facing in Iraq?

I've got an idea about how to "solve" the 80% disapproval rating of the soldiers. (sidebar: What poll are you talking about, who disapproves, who conducted the poll, and who reported it?)

How 'bout the media in America do something like, oh, I don't know, cover the f'ing TRUTH about what our soldiers are doing in Iraq?? The schools opened/renovated, the hospitals, the vaccinations, the medical care, the food and water provided, the oil refineries rebuilt, the stability of EVERYWHERE except the small piss-ant villages of Fallujah and Najaf (which are getting more under control hourly), the friendships built, and everything else EXCEPT the actions of a few in ONE cell block in Abu Graib.

Look, a., despite what you clowns on the left want to believe, our military is not populated by sadistic rapists. Of course, if you're obliged to believe all the lies you read in the NYT, then there is no talking to you. If "The Times (All the News that fit to Lie about)" would just openly declared itself a surrogate of the DNC, I'd have no problem with them attempting to undermine the very troops they and the lefties claim to support. However, they pretend to be impartial, yet the only thing they report about is prison abuse. And you wonder where the disapproval rating comes from?? If you could spend ONE F'IN DAY with a platoon in Iraq, you'd see the "disapproval" is undeserved, and you'd see the "Mainstream Media" is doing everything it can to slander our troops, turn everyone against the war, and spread lies with the ONE hope of achieving their ONLY GOAL: Defeating George Bush in November. Get a clue.

On the original subject, it should be noted that the Christian religion has persisted for two thousand years in spite of everything from the Roman Empire to the Evil Empire. I can't imagine gay marriage putting much of a dent in it. I, for one, am not likely to end my 36-year marriage to a woman so I can rush out and pledge my troth to my fishing buddy.

I suspect that a lot of opposition may arise out of concerns by the financial community in that it would create a whole new legal class of co-owners of property and would impact areas like insurance (family coverage, etc.) and survivorship issues.

I kind of wish they could call it something else besides marriage, so that it is actually set apart in some way from the traditional relationship, giving it a unique social status.

Ivan, be nice to the left-wing clowns. They may be in a bad mood having to clean up over the next couple of decades.

Semi, that's quite ironic. What do you think GW is doing right now? Cleaning up Clinton's messes, that's what.

Ivan -

You mentioned serving in Iraq.

What is it really like over there? What platoon are you serving in?

It's great to have someone who's really over there posting on this site - there are so many chickenhawks out there who support the idea of sending other people over to fight.
