Why Can't Reporters Get the Surplus Number Right?

NASHVILLE - Today's Nashville City Paper story on the Tennessee state Senate passing a state budget, once again by reporter Skip Cauthorn, as a different set of numbers for the state's surplus, and no indication where the numbers came from.

Legislators wrangled over recent weeks before coming up with a plan to spend the state’s roughly $277 million surplus. The surplus includes $129 million in extra funds for this year and an estimated $148 million for next.
You might want to email Skip and tell him the surplus for this year is estimated at $256 million. Ask him to please please get it right at least once before the legislative session ends.
