« Surveying The New Media Landscape | Main | Andy April 13, 2004Hobbling VoIPOne of the most exciting new technologies to me is voice-over-Internet telephony, or VoIP - in short, the transmission of voice calls over the Net instead of over the phone companies copper wires. It's rapidly moving from geekdom to the mainstream as the technology improves, and - left alone - VoIP offers the chance of revolutionizing telecommunications and greatly lowering costs, which would be a boon to small business and the economy in general. But of course it will not be left alone. Some phone companies want to kill or co-opt it, and they're going to try to use Congress and the Federal Communications Commission to hobble it with costly regulations. Free2Innovate.net, a "tech" blog that focuses more on the business side of technology and how regulations and policy decisions can frustrate innovation, has a couple of posts today that look at VoIP and a related technological development called "ENUM" that is being "stalled" by regulatory disputes in the U.S., but is being rolled out in Australia thanks to that country's regulators deliberately doing as little regulating as possible. Start here and scroll up. Posted in Economy & Business

We have always had the power to use IP for voice, right on our own systems, without such 3rd partes as have stepped up to the VOIP plate. Adding vid to the discussion is also within our power. I reject anyone trying to be the central clearing house for such trarfic.... including government agencies Posted by: Bithead at April 13, 2004 02:34 PMI've said for a couple of years now that innovations in technology have removed many of the expensive barrier-to-entry advantages that large businesses have over small businesses. There is little benefit to economies of scale anymore since technology is available at the small scale at a proportionally less expensive price. And small company innovation trumps large company buying clout in many cases. In fact there comes a disadvantage to being a larger company now in controlling the deployment, support and maintenance of technology as these costs don't normally follow a linear scale but more one in line with an exponential calculation.
