« John Kerry: Mr. No | Main | Do The Math: Kerry's Numbers Don't Add Up » March 24, 2004Owens in 2008From the Department of Looking Too Far Ahead: I hereby issue my early endorsement of Colorado Gov. Bill Owens for President. Read more about him here (and you'll also find Gov. Owens mentioned in several posts in my blog archives, via the search function). Arizona Republic political columnist Robert Robb writes: Owens has benefited from his association with the Colorado Taxpayers' Bill of Rights. He was one of just nine state legislators to support it when voters approved it in 1992. The initiative capped state spending at population growth plus inflation. Any surplus revenue has to be rebated. This helped Colorado avoid the spending spree that consumed Arizona and most other states in the late 1990s, and created such gaping deficits when revenues got whacked by the recession. The rebates also proved politically popular.(Are you paying attention, Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen?) Posted in Campaign Season

From the Govenor's Bio: Hah! Posted by: Bill Hobbs at March 24, 2004 11:40 AMYou don't need to use Arizona as an example of excess spending. Point your finger further west to California and see where are "spend and spend some more" legislature put the state into the poor house. We desperately need a TBOR. Posted by: Meatss at March 24, 2004 02:17 PMI think he would be a very good president. Covering his press conferences, he is a intelligent, thoughtful man. He does have a skeleton right now. He is seperated from his wife and is dating an intern. If this can be cleared up, I would think he would be considered a front runner. He is by far the best economic man the Republicans have. Posted by: Darren at March 25, 2004 03:21 PMDarren, Owens is a great candidate for President, and I'm not yet convinced that he and his wife won't get back together. I've not heard one reputable news source conclude that Owens is seeing anybody, much less an intern. They've had months to investigate. Bob Posted by: Bob Kyffin at March 30, 2004 08:51 AMI saw Owens give a speech here in Seattle last night. He was terrific. I concur that he's a man to watch in 2008. He has in fact reconciled with his wife, repositioning himself at the top of the field of candidates for 2008. His candidacy is a mix of the rest of the field without any of the downsides that the others have. He has the social conservatism of Mike Huckabee without being over-zealous about it like Mike. The fiscal conservatism of Mitt Romney without the inconsistencies of Romney's social conservatism. The electability of George Allen and John McCain without being weak of social issues (Allen) or a loose cannon (McCain). Posted by: Steven K at July 15, 2005 12:40 AMPost a comment
