« More on Tax Cuts and Unemployment | Main | Give 'Em Zell » January 14, 2004Why Do So Many Believe a Lie?Darren Kaplan has posted the second part of his excellent exploration of the false claim that the United States "created" Saddam Hussein. Today, he examines why, despite the claim being provably false, many on the Left continue to believe it. If you missed part one, it's here. Here's a bit of part two, though you really should read the whole thing, right down to Kaplan's, uh, killer ending: It seems that in certain intellectual quarters, the charge of “hypocrisy” is the most serious charge that can be leveled at an opponent. Though I’ve not observed it myself, apparently at some point in what passes for debate in these circles, one side will charge the other with “hypocrisy” and immediately be declared the winner by technical knockout. Accordingly, if you can accuse the U.S. of hypocrisy in embarking on a chosen course of conduct you’ve immediately prevailed on the issue and all of your similarly-inclined friends acknowledge your mastery of the subject and the self-evident correctness of your position. Even if we had created Saddam, wouldn't that create an even greater obligation to remove him? Posted by: stan at January 14, 2004 01:43 PMWell, yeah. Funny how the Left yells "hypocrisy!" when America tries to solve a problem the Left alleges America "created," but it is the Left that is hypocritical in saying it believed Saddam was a bad guy, but it, objectively, sought to prevent any attempt to remove him. Posted by: Bill Hobbs at January 14, 2004 01:48 PMWhy *do* so many people believe a lie? Ready to apologize yet for your smears? Posted by: positron at January 14, 2004 03:47 PMI noted that mortar shell update in this post yesterday. What smears? Posted by: Bill Hobbs at January 15, 2004 06:39 AMNo, the US didn't "create" Saddam, but some dumbf*ck Republicans certainly did arm him in the 1980s. Ronnie doesn't remember (oh, snap!), but we've got pictures. http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB82/ Posted by: mark at February 4, 2004 12:43 AMPost a comment
