Ike Blogging

A friend of mine rode out Hurricane Ike on the eighth floor of the Hilton in Nassau Bay, Texas, a suburb of Houston that borders both Houston and the Johnson Space Center, and sits on the waterfront of Clear Lake, an inlet off Galveston Bay. Why stay there through a big hurricane? He works in TV news.

Here's his photo of inside the lobby after the storm:

His report:

I wrote a note last night around 2am from the comfort of a Hilton hotel room eight floors above the water. Then the power went out. Then the eye of the storm went over an hour later. Then things *really* picked up. We awoke (after being jolted 20+ times by an accidentally tripped hotel-wide emergency warning siren) to find Nassau Bay a mess of dirty water, trash, debris and small boats. ... Our Hilton was in great shape before Ike hit. Came down this morning to find a stiff breeze whipping through the mud-soaked lobby.
Bonus trivia: The Hilton Nassau Bay is where local dentist Clara L. Harris ran over her husband in the parking lot of the Nassau Bay Hilton with her Mercedes sedan after discovering him at the hotel with his mistress.
