Planned Parenthood Moving Into the Malls

Ed Morrissey on Planned Parenthood's business plan:

Michele Bachmann (R-MN) gave a short speech on abortion to a mostly-empty chamber last week, and it's unfortunate that more people didn't hear it. In the speech, she detailed the finances of Planned Parenthood, which gets millions each year in taxpayer money to support its efforts. That funding has helped them spread into upscale malls, an effort that the CEO of Planned Parenthood says makes them the "Lenscrafters of family planning."
Morrissey also links to a Wall Street Journal article reporting on Planned Parenthood's marketing makeover to "rebrand" itself as a health provider for upscale women. The organization has "dropped its crusading mission statement setting out the rights of all individuals, no matter their income, to 'reproductive self-determination'," reports the WSJ:
They want to increase their revenues and their political clout, and have even begun selling T-shirts and jewelry along with contraception and abortions.
Bachman calls Planned Parenthood, which earns big profits on billion-dollar revenue, the "big box retailer of abortion," and reveals that Planned Parenthood gets some $15 million in congressional earmarks.

Planned Parenthood funneled a sizable chunk of that cash back to pro-abortion congressman via campaign contributions through its PAC.

I wonder how much of the millions of state tax dollars that Planned Parenthood receives gets funneled to pro-abortion state legislators? Last year, Planned Parenthood received $1.5 million a year from the state budget, thanks to the efforts of pro-abortion Democrats like Gov. Phil Bredesen and House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh. Does Planned Parenthood's PAC give money to pro-abortion Tennessee legislators like Naifeh?

Does it anger you that your tax dollars subsidize the nation's largest (and highly profitable) abortion seller, and that they funnel some of that money to the political campaigns of the politicians who gave them the earmarks?

Update: This post has generated some discussion at Post Politics. In response: It appears that Planned Parenthood's PAC, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, has not donated to any state legislative candidates in Tennessee in recent election cycles - at least not directly. However, it is not outside the realm of possibility that the pro-abortion PAC has funneled money to pro-abortion politicians in Tennessee via donations to other PACs.

Comments

no, it doesn't bother me at all.

But then I don't get paid to be outraged at those kinds of things, do I?

You've got it backwards. I don't "be outraged" because I am paid to, I do the work I do - both at my job and here on my blog - because I already am and was outraged about the things that I'm outraged about.

Frankly, I could have taken my career in a different direction and made more money, but I'd rather make less and work for important goals.

The nice thing is, some people who agree with the positions I take do occasionally drop a few dollars in the tip jar. Not enough to make up what I could be making in a for-profit setting, but it's still nice to receive it, and it makes up somewhat for ignorant comments from people who think that only people who are paid to do so can be outraged about the for-profit slaughter of unborn children.
