« Nashville Seeks to Take Private Property To Benefit Private Developer | Main | Heavy Metal News » June 21, 2008Hot Air from Metro ParksThe Tennessean reports on the dispute between Nashville's Metro Parks Department and the group Americans for Prosperity over the latter's plan to launch a hot air balloon at Warner Park as part of a political protest yesterday. The launch originally was supposed to take place at nearby Warner Park. But Friday morning, organizers were told they were running afoul of a Metro Parks ordinance prohibiting hot air balloon launches from any Metro park, and they scrambled to find another site, the backyard of a home at the corner of Sneed and Vaughn roads. The reporter might want to take a look at the Metro Parks rules - which, as I revealed yesterday, specifically allow hot air balloon launches from three parks, including the Warner Parks. Looks to me like Metro Parks didn't tell The Tennessean the truth. Americans for Prosperity explains what really happened: The Nashville Parks Department is denying us permission to launch the balloon, citing the fact that our permit says balloon rides but not specifically the word "launch." (Is there a way to provide a balloon ride without a launch?)Metro Parks officials ought to be ashamed of what they did yesterday. Posted in Environmentalism

Actually, AFP lied. I have the application in my hand, and they claimed they would offer "tethered hot air balloon rides". According to Roy Wilson, he can approve tethered balloons himself, and he did. But an actual launch requires approval from the parks board. Their statement above isn't entirely honest. It's not the absence of the word "launch", it's the fact that they specifically say "tethered". That really makes it look like deliberate misleading, since they didn't just forget a word. I'm not naive enough to think that there wasn't a strong political angle to it, but the fact is that AFP wasn't honest on their application. And they should know better. It would be interesting to see their applications at other places. Finally, a note to the AFP folks - what you're doing is good, and frankly important. But you have to keep it above board and keep your noses clean, or the issue becomes about you rather than the message that you're pushing. Think about it - this is *exactly* what you're doing to Al Gore - "forget the message, look at the messenger". Now people are doing it to you. Let this matter drop and keep your nose clean next time.
