Gore-ging on Energy

Former Vice President Al Gore's house consumes 10 percent more energy now than before its "green" makeover, the nonpartisan Tennessee Center for Policy Research reveals today:

NASHVILLE - In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former Vice President’s home energy use surged more than 10%, according to the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.
The energy consumed by Gore’s house in the past year could power 232 average American homes for a month.

And that's just the metered power he purchases from the local electric utility - it doesn't count the power Gore's house now gets from its solar panels or the heating/cooling it now gets from its new geothermal system.

Does it count the energy he was previously using in the form of natural gas?

If so, a net decrease may be there. It would be more interesting to see what was spent on the upgrades and calculate the payback for "going green". I find that data hard to come by when it comes to the LEED-lovers. Feasibility is not a problem for them, but hard result data is almost non-existent.

Also, the geothermal water-source heat pumps aren't a "free" ride. They have electric fans, pumps and compressors - just water-cooled vs. air-cooled refrigerant. The earth loop replaces the outdoor condensing unit, so to speak.

Just another example of green hypocrisy.
Great article, Bill

I think if there were some kind of wonderful energy result from the renovations, there would be some kind of effort to use the transformation as a counterpoint to the bad publicity already earned.
This shows that the idea of alternate energy is more powerful than the idea of saving money, public or private. Saving money is a critical mechanism to increasing or preserving disposable income. It seems that Al Gore should be more concerned about the total energy consumption so that he would be able to purchase the correct number of carbon offsets. I would expect that after his energy saving renovations, he could redeem a few carbon offsets.
I don't think Al Gore ever thought that there would be such public interest in this project. It seems like he would at least like for us to learn from his mistakes and release exactly how much was spent on all renovations and how much energy of all kinds is now being saved.

Let us hope, meanwhile, he was not a consultant to the Governor's party bunker.

Wonder if Al has several office staffers working out of this residence? That would explain the increase in usage. PC's, Copier's, and fax machines are relatively heavy users of electricity.

And considering that this residence is located in a Belle Meade neighborhood, I doubt if any official comment will be forthcoming, if this would explain the increase.

Why do some people find any excuse they can to justify Al's egomania? Why is he worth it to you? He is a failed politician. He flunked out of law school and divinity school. His GPA was lower than that of George W. Bush who is considered a moron by the left. He stands to make a huge amount of money on the carbon offset scam. I just don't understand why some people think they have to defend a man who is a loser.

Um . . . having trouble with the math here. Bill, I am sure they are pals of yours, so could you clear this up?

Feb 2007 report: 18,400 kw-hrs per month.
Latest report: 17,668 kw-hrs per month.

-732 = 10% increase?????????
