AP vs. the Bloggers Update

It looks like the Associated Press is backing down - a bit - in its attack on bloggers who link to and quote from AP stories. The New York Times reports that the AP says it will now set guidelines for how much of its content bloggers may use without infringing the AP's copyright. One problem: Nothing in copyright law or case law gives the AP the right to set those guidelines.

The Media Bloggers Association is now involved in discussions with the AP, the NYT says.

Related: Michael Silence wonders why the AP offers RSS feeds if it doesn't want people linking to its stuff. Good question.

Comments

The RSS feed is intended to drive people who use newsreaders to their site.

AP has the right to set "safe harbor" guidelines that in effect limit its right to sue successfully anyone inside the safe harbor.
