« Judicious Questions | Main | Rob Briley, Meet the First Amendment » May 20, 2008The Obama RuleOkay, so Barack Obama says candidate's spouses are off-limits to criticism even if they're out on the campaign trail making speeches on behalf of the candidate they are married to and the criticism is about things the spouse said during a campaign appearance. So... did the Obama campaign and its allies refrain from attacking Bill Clinton for things he said in speeches he gave on behalf of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign? No. So, the Obama Rule is not that spouses are off-limits, just female spouses. Wives. The Obama Rule is very, very sexist. Update: Why does Barack Obama thinks his wife's campaign speeches should be off-limits to criticism? It's not like she isn't fully prepared to defend herself and attack others. From London's Guardian newspaper earlier this month: It's not that Obama doesn't know the anodyne, wifely things to say (essentially, nothing). She is, after all, a 'community and external affairs' professional. But her pride visibly chafes at being asked to subsume her personality, to make herself seem duller and less independent than she is, even in the service of getting her husband elected President of the United States. In Wisconsin, I asked her if she was offended by Bill Clinton's use of the phrase 'fairytale' to describe her husband's characterisation of his position on the Iraq war. At first, Obama responded with a curt 'No'. But, after a few seconds, she affected a funny voice. 'I want to rip his eyes out!' she said, clawing at the air with her fingernails.Bizarre. I think you know what he's referring to. It's not that he expects his wife to be free from criticism but it's the blatant, personal attacks, distortions of what a person says into something completely wrong. That's what you on the right are doing. And this serves as a warning. If your going to establish a campaign based on personal attacks, McCain has plenty of material to bring up. Just remember spousal abuse, keating five, and his uncontrollable temper. Not to mention Mrs. McCain's perscription drug use. Posted by: Irishspacemonk at May 20, 2008 4:15 PMObama has said that you are not smart enough to control the thermostat in your house but everyone else in the world is. Posted by: Kudzu Fire at May 20, 2008 7:17 PMThe neocons are at it again. Now you're comparing Bill Clinton to Michelle Obama? Bill Clinton who was a president for 8 years? You're saying that there is absolutely NO difference between Michelle and Bill except gender?? There's a huge difference between attacking someone with truths, and attacking them with untruths. Example: "For the first time in my adult life, I'm really proud to be an American." Republicans: "She hates America!". Me: For the first time in my Adult life, -I- am "really" proud to be an American. I've always had some pride in being American, but never "Really" proud, since I have to account for the actions of presidents like Bush (I live in Europe now). What she said wasn't wrong, and is something alot of us feel as well. But we don't hate America. We love America, and finally, we're starting to be proud of America for its ability to ignore gender and race. Posted by: Sphynx at May 21, 2008 3:01 AMNo wonder Obama is not proud of America, he thinks anyone else in the world could do a better job of setting our thermostats and deciding what we can eat than we do.
