"The judges of the Supreme Court shall be elected by the qualified voters of the state."

The Wall Street Journal has a good editorial on Tennessee's Judicial Selection Commission the (most likely unconstitutional) process by which the Tennessee legal establishment controls - in secret meetings - who gets appointed to state judgeships and voters get to vote 'yes' or 'no' only on their retention after eight years.
