This underscores, to me, the need for more Republicans to be poll officials. My district is 18-6, and I'd be surprised if I wasn't only Republican working as a poll official. I've been a "machine operator" since the 2006 primaries, and in the last election I was a "judge operator". Until this election, we only had to go the machine operator training. This time, we also had to go to registrar training. That was a real eye opener. They mentioned a case in the last election where a poll official voted for her mom. They caught her and she's facing charges now (if I remember right). I also found out that any citizen has the right to contest the right of any other person to vote. If someone comes in and can't speak a word of English (even though you're required to know how to speak, read, and write English to become an American citizen, then I, as a citizen myself, can contest that person's right to vote. I think the Republican party, at least in Davidson county, needs to have an organized drive to get more Republicans to become poll officials. There's generally a shortage of officials anyway, and there's especially a shortage of Republicans. Posted by: Glen Harness at February 1, 2008 10:35 AMPost a comment
