« We've Been Here Before | Main | Border War » February 6, 2008Tennessee Dems Racially Split?Bob Krumm has some data showing just how fractured the Tennessee Democrat party is along racial lines. Analyzing the county-by-county results in the race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in Tennessee, Krumm notes that Clinton lost Tennessee's urban counties by about a 2:1 margin, narrowly won the suburban counties, and won in rural areas by as much as 10:1 margins. "Rural white Democrats simply will not vote for a black man," Krumm says. Actually, that's not not surprising given the long racist history of the Democratic Party. Update: The racial split in the Democrat Party is a national trend. The party that raised identity politics to an art form in divisive partisan politics now may find it an intra-partisan cancer. One thing no one disputes is how racially unified the Republcians are. Just look at their candidates. When it comes to the general election, the strength of a diverse Demcoratic party will certainly contrast with the video of the crowd in the Republican National Convention. One party looks like America, and one does not. Posted by: Christian at February 6, 2008 2:19 PMYou can do better. It would take a lot of convincing for me to believe that a black Republican candidate for president would unify the Republican party across racial lines. This may be very well be about race, but there is enough historical racism from all American political parties to go around. Post a comment
