Republican Legislators Push DUI Crackdown Legislation

tnflag.jpgRepublicans in the state legislature have introduced comprehensive legislation to combat drunk driving in Tennessee, legislation that would deploy a multi-faceted approach to the problem that includes automatic license revocation, lowering legal blood alcohol content levels for certain offenses, greater use of ignition interlock devices, a ban on open containers, and tougher penalties against repeat offenders and for those who refuse to take the BAC test.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Mae Beavers, R-Mt. Juliet, Sen. Jack Johnson, R-Franklin, General Welfare Chairman Rusty Crowe, R-Johnson City, state Rep. Tom DuBois, R-Columbia, state Rep. Matthew Hill, R-Jonesborough, and state Rep. Jon Lundberg, R-Bristol, announced the legislative package at a press conference Wednesday. You can read the full release, which includes bill numbers, here.

Yes... that's exactly what we need.

We live in a country where we have 5% of the world's population and 25% of the world's prisoners... mostly in local jails based on minor improprieties and subsequent violations of ridiculous probation requirements and fines.

Destroying Joe Sixpack's life over a .08% DUI is just totally freakin' brilliant. Line up after the .15%s all you want but to try to disguise an assault against the 'two glasses of wine with dinner crowd' as anything but a power and money grab by government is absurd.

Thanks for providing a list of people not to support in the next election.

First of all, Tennessee already has .08. The bill to reduce the BAC is for aggravated drunk driving, to reduce it from .20 to .15, plus some other bills recommended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are 11 pieces of legislation they recommend that have been proven to save lives. Tennessee has only adopted five. Out of over 1200 deaths on our highways, over five hundred were alcohol related, up almost 8% last year. The largest number of deaths on the highway are ages 3 to 33 and half of them are due to alcohol related accidents. I have a 3 year old grandson who is on the road with his parents and grandparents. I don't care how much you drink at home, but please do not drink and drive.
I also believe if you check the statistics, two glasses of wine does not get you to .08.
You have all the rights in the world to drink, but when you get in a car and drive drunk, you take other people's
rights and perhaps their lives away from them. In my job, I have seen many lives taken or permanently disabled because of those who think they have the right to drink and drive.

Based on these priorities one would do well to take up assault, robbery or child molesting in favor of happy hour. You're prioritizing the remote potential to do harm over people actually doing harm.

Again... 5% of the world's population... 25% of the world's prisoners. Regardless of your good intentions the result is that you are destroying far more lives than you are saving... you are ruining lives over minor improprieties... and you are feeding a liberty-eating enforcement, prosecution and incarceration monster that consumes far more of our public resource and liberty than can be justified by any sense of reason... eating resources that could be used productively in schools and other value-added investments.

Grandstand to the ignorant masses all you like. But when little Johnny is acting up in class because his dad lost his license, his job, and his family over some minor impropriety; and his mom's working second shift at the food packing plant to make ends meet; it will be your grandson that pays the social cost of Johnny's disruption and malevolence.

It's called unintended consequence but you'll jump on your high horse and laude plans that crank the screws even tighter to solve that problem too ignoring the fact that your cure is the cause.

5% of the world's population... 25% of the world's prisoners. When, and only when, you acknowledge and address that figure as a de facto infringement on liberty; then I will consider your opinion. Until then you are either ignorant or malicious; and regardless of which is true you do not merit any place in setting public policy.
