« How Do You Fence a Bull? | Main | Tennessee Democrats' Big Donor Goes to Prison for Fraud » January 5, 2008None of the AboveTwo laptop computers containing 337,000 Nashville voters' Social Security numbers were stolen as the building's security guard listened to Christmas music, ordered food and visited the break room, failing to make his hourly rounds, reports The Tennessean. Not only that, but the security camera recorder was unplugged, the Social Security data file wasn't encrypted, the laptops were not locked up, the building apparently doesn't have alarms on the windows, and the password to the laptop was on a piece of paper taped to the laptop. Who was in charge of this mess? The Davidson County Election Commission - which is run by a Democrat majority who, it seems, believes total nincompoops should be allowed to run the election office. As Tennessean reporter Michael Cass noted on the paper's "Metro Dispatch" blog, there is a better way to handle voter identity verification. Update: Just a thought, but a person generally needs to show that they have been "damaged" in order to win a civil lawsuit. All 337,000 of those Nashville registered voters now face a lifetime of stressful worrying about being a victim of identity theft, thanks to the staggering incompetence of the Davidson County Election Commission. I'd call that being damaged. Posted in Campaign Season

The election commission was supposed to send a letter to all Davidson county registered voters by yesterday to notify them of the theft and to be on guard for identity fraud. I haven't received my notice, and I'm a registered Davidson County voter. If I haven't, I have to wonder how many people who don't keep up with this kind of thing haven't been notified and don't know to put a fraud alert on their credit cards, etc. How do we know 337 thousand notices went out? I know for sure one that didn't go out. Posted by: MissSharonCobb at January 5, 2008 3:14 AMI am sick and tired of negligent, irresponsible people period. If any military type lost even confidential information, he/she would be Court Martialed. Why is this such a common thing now to lose info with full name, address, and; SSN? When any government contracts out the security of 300,000 plus names plus their complete data with a company with a mere 500K liability-they surely think very little of those who elected them.
