« Theft of Nashville Election Commission Laptops Highlights Need for Voter Photo ID Law | Main | Lowest Life Form Yet Discovered » December 29, 2007Time for a Media African SafariBarack Obama claims foreign policy experience because his grandmother "lives in a tiny hut in Africa." Now, one of two things is true. Either Obama, a multi-millionaire, is a miserly jerk who hasn't bothered to help his grandmother get into better living quarters, or he's lying. I'm not expecting the national media to send a crew to Africa to find Grandmama Obama and - if indeed she lives in a tiny hut - to ask her if Barack has offered to move her into, say, a larger hut or even perhaps a shack or even maybe an apartment, but I'm willing to be surprised... Thanks for the link, Bill. Not sure that Obama is a "multi-millionaire," though. Working from memory, I think his latest financial disclosure showed a net worth between around $500,000 and $1,500,000, or that order of magnitude. Still, more than enough to get one's grandmother out of a "tiny hut" in Kenya. Posted by: TigerHawk at December 29, 2007 6:14 PMThanks for the comment. Obama's book deal in 2004 was a $1.9 million deal. LINK His previous book had already sold 350,000 copies and was in its 16th printing. His second book, The Audacity of Hope, was a best-seller. I figured it is pretty safe to say he's a multi-millionaire. But his official disclosure makes it less clear. CNN: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, reported assets of between $456,000 and $1.1 million, making it unclear if he is a millionaire. He and his wife had total income of $984,000 in 2006, including $567,000 in royalties for two books he has written. In 2005, Obama received a $1.9 million book advance. Multi-millionaire or not, Obama certain can afford to help grandmama move from the "tiny hut" to at least a larger hut. Posted by: Bill Hobbs at December 30, 2007 10:03 AMPerhaps his grandmother is quite happy with the simple life that she has. Perhaps Obama does not feel obliged to dictate how his grandmother should live. Would you uproot your grandmother from the land and the home she has lived for her entire life - just so she could live in a house that *you* felt she wanted or needed? Talk about selfish. Posted by: Daryl at December 30, 2007 10:39 AMEveryone in my house, including kids, reacted immediately to the grandmother comment when the clip hit the news. I figured I heard it out of context and she used to live there. He COULDN'T do that. Someone has to check it out. Posted by: Justene at December 30, 2007 10:48 AMWell, Daryl, I would certainly not force my grandma to move. But most folks given the choice between a "tiny hut" and a house with running water would chose the latter. Frankly, I doubt Obama's claim that she lives in a "tiny hut." It's probably a small house.
