Immigration Politics

immigrationflag.jpgThe Politico says:

Immigration is becoming for the 2008 election what affirmative action/racial preferences was 15 years ago - the kind of emotional wedge issue that offers Republicans a way to split rank-and-file Democrats from their leaders.
There's nothing wrong with wedge issues if you're on the right side of the wedge, and the GOP was on quotas, which is why the issue worked for Republicans. So, where's the right side of the wedge on immigration? It starts with securing the borders and enforcing existing laws - and doesn't end with amnesty for the illegals who are already here.

Republican candidates who promise more of this in order to reduce this will increase their chances of victory in '08 at the local, state and federal level.

I've yet to hear from any of the candidates where the budget will come from to fight a war on illegal immigration. Iraq and the war on drugs cost US taxpayers a fortune and neither look like providing good value or victory.
Why/how would it be any different in a war on illegal immigrants?

Lovely to see a Franklin TN connection...

UK, thanks for the opportunity to educate! Much of the money would come from the reduced costs & savings from not having the illegals suckling public largesse. Remove more sucklers, & the program would pay for itself in legal citizens being employed & paying taxes.

The "war" on drugs is much different than the war in Iraq. Iraq is not a law-enforcement issue - the illegal "immigration" issue & illegal drug issue are mainly law-enforcement issues. I guess these issues are similar in that the druggie just wants the drugs & the dealer chain wants to sell the drugs to the druggie, regrdless of who else is hurt. The employer/exploiter of illegal labor just wants the cheap labor & some want the easily manipulated & controlled voting bloc without regard to who or what else is hurt. It's similar in this way also - neither problem will be solved by making the illegal legal!
