« Bredesen, Admininstration Hit with RICO Lawsuit | Main | Let's Hear It For Open Government » October 29, 2007Today's the Day.I'm sure you heard this career advice at one time or another: "Do what you love and the money will come." Well, today, I'm living proof of that. I love writing and media, and I love politics, and today I start a paying job as communications director for the Tennessee Republican Party. You ever see a big-money lottery winner say they won't be quitting their job despite their new millions? I feel like I just started that kind of a job. Update: Welcome Instapundit readers. You can support the Tennessee GOP - and thus, help keep me employed and help expand the impact of blogs in politics - here. Posted in Miscellaneous

My very best to you in this new venture! Posted by: Paul at October 29, 2007 9:02 AMCongrats! You will be a great asset to the team. It is going to be an interesting year to say the least. Posted by: IM Russell at October 29, 2007 9:13 AMCongratulations, Bill, and best of luck in the new job. May all your press encounters be the delightful duty of explaining victories that confound them, and none of your press encounters be tap-dancing through scandals! Posted by: Kevin R.C. 'Hognose' O'Brien at October 29, 2007 9:52 AMCongratulations, Bill. I know you'll do it with excellence and integrity. Scott Posted by: Scott Ott at October 29, 2007 9:57 AMCongratulations Bill! That's exciting news. They couldn't have picked a better man for the job. Regards, Jonathan Bailey Posted by: Jonathan Bailey at October 29, 2007 10:10 AMBill, Through your writings, I've come to know you as a man of honor and integrity. So how will you reconcile your position on issues with the fact that you now receive your pay from a partisan group? I mean, let's say the Tennessee Republican Party gets really stupid and comes out endorsing a state income tax. (It could happen. Remember that dammed 'Dandy Don Turncoat' Sundquist??) Where will you be then? What stand will you take that won't compromise your personal integrity? The flip side of doing this for a passion or for pay is if you do it for pay, you can be FIRED! I'm happy you found something you enjoy and the fact you'll get paid for doing it. But for me, I may start to wonder: "Is this Bill Hobbs, or what they are paying Bill Hobbs to say??" Hoping your heart remains pure and your ink untainted, I remain a loyal reader... Jim Boyd Posted by: William James (Jim) Boyd at October 29, 2007 10:17 AMCongratulations, Bill. Thanks for everything you have done on behalf of bloggers in this state, and all the best to you in your new job. Posted by: joe lance at October 29, 2007 12:40 PMSounds like a win-win-win for the TNGOP, you, and your loyal readership. Everyone wins- except TN Dems... Posted by: Rix at October 29, 2007 3:14 PM..."taken the Boeing."? Is that some kind of inside joke? Posted by: Dean at October 29, 2007 5:51 PM"take the Boeing" is blogosphere slang for a blogger taking a paid blogging gig or a paid gig that involves blogging. It originally meant a blogger being hired by a media outlet to blog for them, and originated after blogger Mickey Kaus's blog, kausfiles was acquired by Slate.com, which is owned by Microsoft, back in 2002. As Glen Reynolds recounts (link below), Kaus offered to "send the Boeing" for Glenn next time Glenn was traveling to Seattle. It was tongue-in-cheek, but soon became slang for a blogger getting a paid blogging job. Posted by: Bill Hobbs at October 29, 2007 11:17 PMBill; Post a comment
