Farr's probably on edge these days given the recent court ruling declaring the state's "crack tax" unconstitutional. Farr plans to appeal the latest ruling to the state Supreme Court, even though Gov. Phil Bredesen previously suggested the department drop the appeal and stop collecting the tax, but now he is "deferring" to the state Attorney General on whether or not to appeal the ruling. Bredesen, when he isn't out in public littering, also is trying to declaim credit for the crack tax legislation - saying "That one wasn't my piece of legislation" - even though he eagerly signed it into law on June 3, 2004. Governor, when you sign a piece of legislation into law it becomes your piece of legislation. The more that government taxes, the more it is tempted to use its police powers against the citizenry in order to protect its revenue stream. Higher taxes = less freedom. The only difference between a tax man and a taxidermist is that the taxidermist leaves the skin. -- Mark Twain Posted by: Rick Forman at October 3, 2007 3:58 PMWow! Remember when our legislators gave us a pittance back in the form of a 1/2 cent reduction on food, banned smoking, & increased the cigarette tax by $.62. The state has a vested interest in people continuing this supposedly Sinful & Nasty Behavior & all the while "professing to discourage certain behaviors" & "relying on their continuance as a source of revenue." Posted by: TN Slave at October 4, 2007 11:35 AMI checked on the income from the crack tax and they got $4.80 one year. From July 06 to Jan 07 they got $911,785.22. From July 05 to Jan 06 they got $475,916.39. It would be interesting to know how they would pay all of this back. They copied this legislation from other states so it kind of begs the question if any other state has had the same problems. Posted by: Danny L. Newton at October 4, 2007 7:25 PMPost a comment
