Fred in Lawrenceburg

This Saturday evening at 7pm, Fred Thompson will be returning to his hometown of Lawrenceburg , Tennessee for a celebration and speech to mark the beginning of his presidential campaign. I received an email from the campaign especially inviting Tennessee bloggers to cover the event. Event details to follow. I'm scheduled to interview Sen. Thompson solo before the event - your suggestions for questions welcomed. I'm thinking of giving him a copy of my book.

I expect to be there. I grew up in Lawrenceburg.

I have a feeling he'll use the town square, right below the statue of David Crockett, to do his speech.

Oh, and for those going to Lawrenceburg for the event, the Indian museum on the town square is worth a few minutes, especially if you have Indian ancestry. It's in an old bank building at the north entrance to the square. The drug store/soda shop across the street from it is another nice place to visit, though I bet it will be packed while Fred's in town. It's still pretty much as it was in fifties.

I'll try to go down there -- it isn't far from me -- and meet up with bloggers who are there.

Oh yeah, you can ask Fred what he proposes to do about the 20 million to 30 million (if not more) illegal aliens who are here, but I think we already know.

I'm concerned about the "detail trap," Bill. There's a whole lot of detail that these career politicians like to spout that doesn't matter a hill of beans. They'll try to trip him up on economic or foreign policy minutia when what really matters as a president are ideology, intelligence, decisiveness and an ability to communicate. There's a difference between knowledge and intelligence. Knowledge is what your senior staff and cabinet is responsible for providing; making intelligent decisions based on this information is what the president is for.

Again - that's the trap the media and other career politicians are going to set for Fred. I guess my question for him is how is he going to blunt that attack and focus back in on his truly exceptional attributes to be our next president?

Marsha just talked about Fred's stance on immigration- a fence? That's no different than every other candidate (including the democrats, other than Richardson). If you hit this topic, I'd like to hear about what he would do to enforce the law with employers!

Actually, I'd like to see him address the issue of the instabilities within Pakistan. If Musharaf can't hold onto power through the next election (or if there is a revolt after he declares martial law), what would he do if he woke up and nuclear-capable Pakistan is taken over by an Islamic fundamentalist party, which would pretty much let A.Q. Kahn back out of house arrest.

Here's a good question:

Given the tightly-packed Primary schedule, and the fact that your opponents got a head-start in Iowa and New Hampshire, if you should not win those States, will it signal an early end to the campaign, or will you stick it out until Super Tuesday regardless of what happens in Iowa and New Hampshire?
