Greener Gore

Criticism of Al Gore's energy-hogging mansion and carbon-spewing lifestyle that seemed so at odds with Mr. Inconvenient Truth's anti-global warming crusade seems to have spurred the former Vice President into some serious greening of his Nashville estate. And we're not talking landscaping. He's having a geothermal heating and cooling system installed.

Tony Perkins at AO2007 mentioned that the building sector emits 10 times the greenhouse ickies as do autos. So of course I suggested to HP, IBM, Level3 and SUN that geothermal heat exchange tech ought to be applied to data centers. Do you know anyone with an in at Apple ;-) who could suggest it there?

It is likely not "Geothermal". It is called "GeoSOURCE". It is simply a water or liquid based Heat Pump. The liquids in a plastic pipe are buried and are recirculated through the ground or water table to use the normally 55 degree temp of the earth to then push the liquid through the heat exchanger of the normal Heat Pump. You can also drill a regular old water well and run water through the Heat Pump - its called a Water Source Heat Pump. Many in the Midwest have been using these for 15 years or more.

The term GeoTHERMAL is usually reserved for the hot steam vents etc like in Iceland. Gores deal is just normal 55 degree earth temp that stays that way year round after about 6 feet deep.

The US leaders in this are located at Oklahoma State Univ. and info can be found here:

If there is a betting pool on this, I would like to bet a cup of coffee that he gets $400 off of his monthly bill with this if nothing is done about the building envelope, including windows. He will probably wish he moved to Memphis(soil all the way down) when he tries to drill down 300 feet through the rock in Nashville. Maybe he can get some old Occidental Oil rig to drill the holes for him. He still has to run a compressor and blow air inside the house.
