Buh Bye MovableType, Hello Wordpress

wordpress%20logo.jpegAfter spending 20 minutes of my life that I'll never get back deleting a flood of comments spam from my blog I've come to the conclusion that MovableType blogging software - I'm running the very latest version - no longer has the ability to effectively combat comment spam, and have determined to switch this blog over to Wordpress soon. I'm already using Wordpress for most of the other blog projects I'm involved in, and it does effectively weed out spam. I do dread the process of migrating this blog, with its 7,630 entries and 13,071 non-spam comments, to a new publishing platform, but surely it can't be as bad as having to spend increasing amounts of time every day deleting comments spam.

But if one of my devoted readers has experience moving an existing blog from MovableType to Wordpress and were to volunteer to do it for free, I sure wouldn't mind.

I wish I could help, but I've never used Moveable Type. However, Wordpress is supposed to do a good job importing posts from a variety of blogging platforms. It worked pretty well when I imported my Blogger posts.

I love Akismet spam filter -- Wordpress has done a great job with that plugin. If you're really reluctant to switch to Wordpress, you could always use Akismet on your current blog. I believe there are developer tools that can port it over to other platforms.

Bill,
Contact Lynnster. She single-handedly helped most of the Nashville bloggers switch from whatever they were using to Wordpress.

Her site is:

On her site, she has a contact button.

I'm one of the few still on blogger, but everyone who switched seems to be happy with it.

Good idea on the switch. Some spam is too clever, but for the most part, Wordpress has worked well in keeping the undesirable out (I mean, spammers) of MooreThoughts.

Bill, We finally settled on MovableType's Comment Challenge plug-in to kill the several thousand comment spam that we were getting at BU every day. It is working very well and has considerable flexibility.

I think you'll find WP easy to use, and the wealth of plugins will allow any bells and whistles you want.

I imported from Blogger, with some glitches. From all I've read, your comments will be the toughest import.
