« Democrats Raise Taxes Amid Record Revenue Surplus | Main | Indoctrinate U » June 1, 2007Clueless?I have tried a few times to craft a response to Tennessean political columnist Larry Daughtrey's latest offering published last Sunday, but I can't do it. The column is resistant to serious fisking or even parody. Daughtrey's column defends pork-barrel spending, says only "clueless" people oppose a quarter-billion-dollar tax increase when the state is running a record revenue surplus, and defends legislators' use of surplus revenue as a way to buy votes and sustain incumbency. Daughtrey used to be a pretty good political columnist, an old-school Democrat who fought for the working man and against the power and privilege of the elite, but lately he's become a parody of himself. Daughtrey just repeats the Bill Clinton moral mantra. "I did not have pork with that woman, Miss Piggy, but she sure has a cute blue dress." By the Clinton Values: "What's wrong with a little sex (Pork), everyone does it. Somebody will take it, if I don't get mine first." Posted by: Jim Charlet at June 1, 2007 10:14 AMSenator Doug Jackson calls pork "constituent service" in the video provided by Tennessee Tax Revolt dated 01 April 2007. So, it is possible that the definition of pork has become so loose that it is hard to have a serious discussion about it. I suggest the following: Pork is the consumption of resources under color of law for the benefit of the few and at the expense of the many. It should be seen as unethical but when a society becomes a little fuzzy on the difference between right and wrong, pork should abound in ways that we never dreamed possible. I can see why the state might want to give some of the money back since it takes 7 cents on the dollar and leaves only 2.5 to 2.75 cents to the local governments. If the legislature won't give the money back to the taxpayers, then you might at least think they could rebate some money to county and city governments so they could redistribute the excess. Some counties might have turned that into property tax relief or held it in reserve in case the Seat Belts in the Bus law goes into effect. They might even spend it on an extra school. This local spending spree is probably the only and faintest sign of guilt that we will ever see. Posted by: Danny L. Newton at June 1, 2007 1:10 PMI'm the lone "Both" vote so far because I would definitely enjoy Hobbs' thoughts in the daily fishwrap, but I also enjoy in amazement how off-the-wall Daughtrey has become. Posted by: "John Galt" at June 1, 2007 1:29 PMSometimes I'm embarrassed for Larry, but I blame the editors. Posted by: Donna Locke at June 1, 2007 10:30 PMThis isn't recent. Daughtrey has been an embarrassment for at least 20 years. He'll defend anything the Democrat party does, and is probably the only individual in the state who can write (with a straight face) a kiss-up puff piece on the Dictator of the House, Boss Hogg Naifeh.
