Tennessee May Ban Rebates for Home Sales

tnflag.jpgLegislation that would interfere with the right of real estate agents to use rebates - a common practice in other businesses - to price and promote their services competitively, has gone to Gov. Phil Bredesen for his signature. He should veto it. The legislation sticks the state's nose where it doesn't belong.

Comments

Bill,

This legislation is not only blatantly anti-competitive, but it looks to me as though the method used to sneak it through the legislative process without much time for public notice and reaction is... well, unethical. Please see my review of the history of the bill (as it appears on the state's official legislative Web site) at www.littlepinkhouses.com.

I spoke to Mr. Bucy of the Tennessee Association of Realtors who assured me that changing legislation completely at the last minute is a common occurrence in TN.

Is this truly the way democracy works in your state?

Thanks,

Cathy
