« One of The Good Guys | Main | The Low Cost of Doing Nothing » March 24, 2007Spotted: Al Gore's New BlogAl Gore is blogging. His first post was on Feb. 27, right as the controversy over his hypocritcally energy-hogging lifestyle was breaking. But no mention of it on his blog, which is jammed with YouTube vids featuring Gore and is all about promoting Gore's various appearances and, of course, encouraging people to push Congress to address global warming. Unfortunately, the Gore blog doesn't allow for readers to post comments. Al does invite readers to "Please join the conversation" - by submitting their email address. That's not a "conversation," Al, that's an email mailing list. Email newsletters are for one-way communication. Blogs are for conversations. A well-done Gore blog would be a great addition to the discussion and debate over global warming and its causes and related policy issues. Here's hoping Al's new blog evolves that way. Al Gore is the best potential unifying force to unite small Green supporters. I am dismayed by the inaccessibility of such a dynamic person. He should at least have a group of volunteers who CAN be contacted for opinions and with whom to register ideas. I am also worried. Here is worry number one. The Green movement in America must be sufficiently well capitalized for the work to get done. Large capital has been so entrenched in the Right that they cannot see how to invest effectively. The small scale Green investing, such as a tuition surcharge at Universities, is not costly on an individual basis. A "free floating" small scale investment forum would be very welcome. In my County, a $3 tuition hike, well invested, gave UCSC a 100% Green designation. One of the hallmarks of Western Civilization has been secrecy about money in order to guarantee enough wage-slave workers to make sure that "all" aspects of civilization are maintained. I can prove that capitalism has serious flaws. The amount of capital needed to truly go Green, for America, places an additional heavy load on a financial method (capitalism) that doesn't work to begin with. I like Al Gore's project to replace Income Taxes with a Carbon Tax. My only problem is that the wasteful Federal Government will be the recipient of all those funds. I propose that there be a portion of those Carbon Taxes paid to a general private fund to act as a Research & Development capitalization fund. Further, the way to properly utilize a Carbon Tax is to carbon tax those who can pay and not necessarily those who BURN the hydrocarbons. Many industries are getting around Carbon debit by saying that they only produce the hydrocarbons, they do not actually cause the CO2 emissions. I also want to be able to sue Public Entities for Methane escape in the Case of Dairies in the Central Valley of California, without the settlement coming from the General Fund. Governments should be allowed to generate money from scratch in settlement cases involving greenhouse gas emissions. They are violating the law and must be held responsible for not enforcing. Dairy manure converted to Methane can fuel the entire base necessities of the Central Valley. There are a Lot of Dairy Farms. Methane is 20 times the greenhouse gas of CO2 and accounts for 15% of the total greenhouse effect in the atmosphere. Posted by: Glenn Rabenold at April 24, 2007 2:21 PMPost a comment
