Nobody's Perfect

Fallout from the Al-Gore's-an-energy-hog story: IowaHawk offers a low-cost solution to global warming, Tyler Cowen looks at the economics of "carbon offsets," Eric Scheie spins from Gore's environmental hypocrisy for a good discussion of hypocrisy and politics, Creative Destruction explains why "environmentalists who really believe in treating the planet well don't usually live in power-sucking mansions and fly everywhere in private jets," while Les Jones speculates on why Gore's house uses so much power. The Economist explains why carbon offsets don't do much to reduce carbon emissions. And Don Surber wonders why the media are making excuses for Gore, an "an air-conditioned oil millionaire with a zinc mine who preaches one thing while doing another."

Ah, yes, there is that polluting zinc mine on Al Gore's property, from which he has earned more than half a million dollars in mineral royalties...

Update: The leftwing Huffington Post is out with a list of "talking points" to help Gore-backers fend off the criticism of his electric usage. Some of them are misleading or flat dishonest. Here's one:

"Most of the electricity in TN comes from hydro and nuclear, and so doesn't generate all that much CO2 anyway."
That is just not true.

Gore's home gets its electricity from Nashville Electric Service, which does not generate power but rather gets it from the Tennessee Valley Authority. According to the TVA's own website, TVA's 11 coal-fired power plants generate 60 percent of all TVA electricity. TVA says its coal-fired plants "have been the backbone of the power system since the 1950s."

TVA also operates 72 "combustion turbines" which, during times of higher demand, kick on to generate more power. They run on natural gas or fuel oil - more carbon!

About 30 percent of TVA's power supply comes from its three nuclear plants. That means about 10 percent comes from TVA's hydro operations.

You can see more of my response to the HuffPo's misleading talking points here. I posted links to this information at HuffPo too, and it took hours for the comment to appear on the site.

Don't expect the HuffPos to correct their post. Reality for them can be refashioned quicker than Bill Clinton can define "is."

Whatever it takes to defend the high priest of their new state religion.

I'm really shocked about sites like the Huffington Post. How can they print out and out lies? I mean, there is a very interesting debate to be had here about carbon offsets and what can be done about the environment... lies don't aid that debate at all.
