Six-Month Surplus

tnflag.jpgTennessee state government is running an $85 million revenue surplus halfway through the fiscal year. Here's the AP report. Here's the state's press release and data spreadsheet.

Based on recent history, Tennessee is probably headed toward another $300-$400 million surplus when the books are closed at the end of the fiscal year. This year's revenue surplus is actually ahead of last year's halfway through the fiscal year. After six months of revenue collection last fiscal year, the state's revenue surplus was $63.1 million - but the state ended the year with a surplus of $411.2 million.

Comments

I'd still like to know:

1. Where did the $411 MILLION over-collection of taxes go?

2. Why does our governor think this means we need to increase taxes on cigarettes?

3. Since this surplus (that mysteriously disappeared) exceeds the total collection of sales tax on food, why can't removing the sales tax on food even be considered?

I promise it would be "for the children" - at least the ones I am feeding...
