Investigators: Sen. Cooper Was Driving Drunk

tnflag.jpgState Sen. Jerry Cooper, D-Morrison, has been charged with DUI and speeding related to his one-vehicle crash a few weeks ago in which he was injured. For details see The Tennessean, the Nashville City Paper, the Murfreesboro Post, and VolunteerVoters.com, which has links to the rest.

coopermug.jpgCooper is the prime sponsor of several pieces of legislation designed to expand the sale of alcoholic beverages, including Senate Bill 1223, which would allow certain non-profit organizations to sell wine;
Senate Bill 1224, which would allow wine retailers and wineries to offer free samples of wine to consumers on the premises; and Senate Bills 0829 and 1219, which would allow certain resorts to sell alcoholic beverages.

Cooper also is facing federal fraud charges in a land deal case.

Comments

Exactly as I conjectured in Bill's original post on the subject.

Now someone explain to me why it's taken weeks to announce that Sen. Cooper was, in fact, driving drunk at the time of his accident?

My guess? The behind the scenes wrangling over how and when to release the information drug on this long. (I guess I should just be happy that my home county of Rutherford actually DID announce the charges.)

Get these hypocritical pieces of political garbage OUT of the system. I'm talking to YOU, Morrison.

Politicians in Tennessee have the honor of being part of the protected class, along with entertainment personalities and sports stars. This position gives them the right to avoid prosecutions for their misdeeds unless the powers-that-be are overwhelmed by public opinion. Oh, yes, also a part of the protected class, illegal aliens.

and the follow up...... he got 1 day in jail and a revoked license but plans to apply for a restricted license.
Then there was Kenneth Shelton the Coffee County assistant DA who was also arrested in Rutherford County and apparently also walked. That one was really hushed up.
DUI, leaving the scene, the whole 9 yards and it all went away. His boss Mickey Layne even said publically, before his Aug. 8th hearing, that he'd only be out of work for a couple of weeks Now how did he know that before the man ever went before a judge? Like Matt said "hypocritical pieces of political garbage"
