Does This Headline Grab You?

mediaflagsmall.jpgNews.com had an interesting story recently about how newspapers are adapting to attract readers to their websites. The core of it: "Pithy, witty and provocative headlines - the pride of many an editor - are often useless and even counterproductive in getting the Web page ranked high in search engines. A low ranking means limited exposure and fewer readers." (Hat tip: Ben C.)

Comments

Those "pithy, witty and provocative" headlines weren't really much use in the print edition. Nine times out of ten they didn't reflect what the story actually said.

However, my favorite all time headline from the Tennessean was after an election a few years ago in La Vergne when their mayor was either recalled or lost reelection: "La Vergne Ousts Shirley"
