« Running Fred? | Main | Bredesen's Inaugural Speech »

January 20, 2007

tnflag.jpgBack in early September I made a prediction that Gov. Phil Bredesen - who was at the time running tons of campaign commercials stressing his commitment to addressing illegal immigration - would drop the issue after he was re-elected. I wrote,

Bredesen didn't really start working on solutions to the societal ills and dangers posed by the surging wave of illegal immigrants in Tennessee until it became an election-year issue, and three people were dead. Bredesen didn't care about illegal immigration two months ago. Two months from now, after the election, he won't either.
Well, today Gov. Bredesen was sworn in for a second term and then made the customary inauguration speech. And how many times did he mention illegal immigration?

Not once.

Of course, rhetoric is nothing but the art of persuasion, especially political persuasion. As history teaches us, its connection to truth or fact is nebulous.

". . . by Pericles' day the word "rhetor" ("orator") seems to have been becoming what it remained throughout the fourth century [B.C.], the regular term for what we would call a 'politician'. [David Stockton, "The Classical Athenian Democracy" (New York: Oxford University Press, 1990), p. 118]

And how many more people have been killed by illegal immigrants since then? The media shouldn't let this pass. I certainly hope bloggers and others in public office won't let it slide. We must demagnetize the state and urge our leaders in DC to seal the border.

Now, come on, didn't mention immigration!? That's not true. His education initiatives include teaching Tennessee children how to speak Spanish so that they will not feel like second class citizens in the future.
