« Running on Empty: Tennessean Gas Tax Story Rife With Misrepresentations | Main | Announcing: ElephantBiz.com » December 3, 2006Putting the Cart Before the Horse
Road revenues should pay for roads, but where does the money come from if road revenues don't match the need? The Tennessee Department of Transportation currently gets about 13 cents of the 21.4-cent per gallon state gasoline tax that drivers pay in Tennessee - the rest is diverted to other things. Before any proposals for new or higher taxes for transportation construction are discussed or studied or proposed, the legislature must make sure that TDOT is getting every single penny of gas tax revenue collected in Tennessee - and that it uses modern financing tools to get the most bang for the buck.
