Bredesen Supporters Reportedly Chant "Income Tax! Income Tax!"

tnflag.jpgI just received the following email from someone who attended the send-off this morning for Republican gubernatorial nominee Jim Bryson's 80-hour campaign bus trip...

I just got back from the Jim Bryson send off. Lest there be any doubt that the income tax is still alive, Bredesen's supporters met Jim's bus LOUDLY -- chanting for their candidate, then went into a loud chant hollering, "INCOME TAX! INCOME TAX!"...................on and on and on! It is NOT a dead issue! No way! I HOPE Channel 5 broadcasts THAT. They were there, and they heard them! A heartwarming sight (on a cold morning) was when our fabulous, former First Lady, Betty Dunn, picked up a "Jim" sign and walked right through their group to the street where she wielded that sign for all to see right in the middle of the Bredesen supporters with all their signs. Governor Dunn came through the lobby past me and said, Did you see where my wife went?" I told him, and he immediately went rushing out to her side. They sure made me proud! I have the photos to prove it! Please pass this along to everybody you know who does not want an income tax. Although Bredesen is saying he is against it, his supporters are definitely supporting an income tax, and they proved that this morning. Is there any doubt he is "with" his supporters?????
Interesting. I'd sure like to see the video. If Newschannel5 doesn't air it, perhaps the relevant clip might get uploaded to YouTube.com...

Update: I would like to hear from others who were there as to what they heard the Bredesen supporters chanting.

Update: The story has been confirmed by a second eyewitness.

The fact is, Gov. Bredesen's party, the Tennessee Democratic Party, has endorsed a state income tax and long called for one. The only reason Democrats running for office in Tennessee claim to be against the income tax is they know they can't get elected by being openly for it.

Comments

I've been to numerous Democratic events, and never once have I heard a chant for an "income tax".

When you saw that email, did you even question it? Why in God's name do you think Bredesen supporters would chant "income tax"? Even if they secretly wanted one as you guys like to think is the case, why would they openly chant it? Do you think they are so stupid as to think that would help Bredesen.

Let's put our logic caps on folks.

My gosh Hobbs, are you that desperate? You know that any chanting about the income tax was meant to point out that Bryson's campaign chair, Winfield Dunn, is the grandfather of the income tax debate in Tennessee.

Admit it and move on.

Here\'s a question: Do you even try to be accurate, or does that just not matter in the world of Hobb? If you\'d taken enough initiative to run a Google news search, you might\'ve run across an AP story (see below), which said the Bredesen supporters were chanting \"Big Mistake.\" If this ridiculous claim is the best you can muster, then it\'s no wonder you and your candidate are getting soundly thrashed ...

Bredesen slows campaign while Bryson on last-minute \'blitz\'
By TRAVIS LOLLER
Associated Press Writer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - While state Sen. Jim Bryson made campaign stops in Nashville, Murfreesboro and Knoxville on Friday, incumbent Phil Bredesen spent the day attending to his gubernatorial duties.
The governor, who has a large lead in the polls, has slowed his campaigning somewhat, although he still plans to make a few appearances in support of other Democrats before Election Day.
Bryson kicked off an 80-hour \"blitz\" of the state from a Nashville hotel Friday morning, explaining to a group of supporters his key positions, including a crackdown on illegal immigration and cutting the sales tax on food.
\"Traveling around the state, it\'s hard to explain, but when I\'m out talking to people, I feel what\'s going on,\" Bryson said in an interview. \"People are excited that they could have a good governor\'s leadership on things they care about.\"
Meanwhile, Bredesen supporters were gathered on the sidewalk outside the hotel chanting \"Big Mistake, Big Mistake\" _ a play on a theme of Bryson\'s campaign that includes the \"Big Bus\" he travels in and a television advertisement that spoke of his \"big ideas\" and \"big heart.\"
Bredesen himself was attending to gubernatorial business, campaign spokesman Will Pinkston said, pointing out that the governor had just completed a campaign tour that took him to more than 30 counties.
\"We feel very confident the governor\'s going to win Tuesday,\" he said, \"but even if he didn\'t have an opponent, he\'d still be out there. ... The voters still want to talk to the governor, and the governor still wants to talk to them.\"
Bredesen has been promoting his plans to improve education while touting a drop in the state\'s unemployment rate, an increase in its bond rating and the Cover Tennessee program, designed to help small businesses provide health care to their employees.
Bryson\'s second campaign stop on Friday was at Murfreesboro\'s town square, where he introduced himself to the lunch crowd at the City Cafe.
Diner Fayne Haynes said he intends to vote for Bryson because \"he\'s a Republican.\"
The World War II vet said he was \"out with the Democrats because they knocked the war and they knocked President Bush.\"
Cafe owner Gary Simpson said his business is a popular stop for candidates from both parties and he has a button he often wears for such occasions that reads \"I\'m for your candidate.\"
Simpson pointed out that two assistants to U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon, a Democrat, were eating at the restaurant during Bryson\'s visit.
\"That\'s how equal we are,\" he said.
