« Never Forget | Main | Tennessee Election Coordinator Refuses to Check Rolls for Fake Social Security Numbers » October 5, 2006Randy Rinks Update
Seems like a no-brainer page-one scandal story to me. It's even got a second angle - last year Rinks sponsored and passed legislation that stands a good chance of fattening his own wallet. As I reported here last July: Rinks sponsored and helped draft a bill passed by the General Assembly in 2005 establishing the "Tennessee River Resort District," which authorizes counties such as Hardin, which encompasses Pickwick Lake, to keep much of their state sales-tax revenue for use in developing and promoting tourism. The measure was modeled after legislation used to help develop Gatlinburg and Pidgeon Forge near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There's still time before the election for the media to spotlight the questionable ethics of state Rep. Randy Rinks. C'mon, media. Visit Ted's Tablet today, or follow the links above. And then try to get a comment from Rinks. Good luck with that, though. I've left multiple messages for Rep. Rinks. He hasn't responded. (And, as the local papers in Rinks' district seem loathe to challenge him, does anyone know what it might cost to run a half-page ad in the local papers down there to inform the voters of the district about Rinks' suspicious campaign expenditures?) Bonus bit of info from the archives: In 2002, Rinks voted for the income tax. The good news for the fine people of District 71: In four weeks they can remove Rinks from the legislature and replace him with a fine and decent alternative. Posted in Tennessee Government News

The COURIER finally did their 'candidates on the Issues' for Rep Rinks in this week's edition. In about a half page of words the only mention of this matter is as follows: "Touching briefly on an ethic issue which some critics have been gnawing, Rinks contends his campaign financial disclosure statements which have been questioned complied with the law in effect at the time they were filed. Later financial disclosure donuments comply with a more detailed reporting requirement now in place, he says. A formal complaint Hardin County resident Ted Cook filed against Rinks with the Tennessee Registry of Election Finance was dismisseed." How's that for putting a positive spin for Rinks. They chose to ignore the review of Randy's 2006 reports on his expenditures. (http://teddstablet.blogspot.com/2006/09/odd-things-about-rep-rinks-2006.html) Ted G. Cook Posted by: Ted G.
