« Birdie | Main | North Korea » October 9, 2006Electronics QuestionI have a 12-year old Sony rear-screen projection big screen TV that has, lately, developed a yellow outline around the images on the screen, more pronounced at the right and left sides of the screen than in the center. I've fiddled with all the various adjustments on the TV and it doesn't seem to improve. Anyone out there among my 11 readers have thoughts about the cause and the cure? Alternately, anyone out there skilled at fixing TVs? Update: General consensus from readers and from talking to a couple of TV repair experts is that there is likely a circuitry problem affecting the alignment of one or more of the light projectors in the TV. General consensus also is that it makes more sense to buy a new TV - but that someone out there with expertise in fixing old TVs might want to buy it. So... if you want a Sony big screen TV with a 46-inch diagonal screen, make me an offer. It's Sony model number KP46XBR35, and I have a PDF of the owner's manual. Here are the specs. The lights inside the projector probably need adjusting/aligning, especially since you have one color more pronounced and the problem stays to the sides. We had this done once while our 45" Mitsubishi was still under warranty, and it's the same age. Unfortunately I can't recommend any good repairmen since we bought it from H.H. Gregg and they sent a guy out. Posted by: Jill at October 9, 2006 12:27 PMThe technology of a 12-year old RP set is so outdated it would not be worth the repair. Bite the bullet and go for an LCD or DLP RP set and be amazed how much better it will be. Posted by: "John Galt" at October 9, 2006 12:52 PMThose bulbs have a relatively short life compared to a typical CRT television. Most likely it is one or more of the RGB bulbs needs replacing. And I agree with the previous poster--given the prohibitive cost of these specialty bulbs, you're probably best off buying a new TV or project. I personally recommend buying a projector if you have at least a 15'x15' room to use it in. Nothing beats a 132" screen on your wall to watch TV, movies, and play games on. :) Sorry this is a comment a year after your post, not sure if you still have the set or not. Sounds like you just need to adjust the convergence on the set. I have the same model and everything was off. But instead of a yellow outline, mine was blue. Yes you can adjust convergence in the menu, but it is not as accurate as turning the many screws located on your D-Board located behind the front plastic cover of your set. It is time comsuming and recommend having a TV repair place do it. Also, it is a possibility you may need to change the coolant in the tubes. Like a swimming pool, it can get cloudy and even have green algae in it. My friend has a Magnavox set thats as old as mine and it was horrible. All 3 tubes were nasty. I got a rubber o-ring set with coolant from mcmelectronics.com. But I highly recommend have a tv service place do this too because if you spill the coolant on the circuit boards below, it would be hours of cleaning fun. Also check out www.fixyourowntv.com. I'm sure Dakota will help you out. Posted by: Jason at November 4, 2007 9:18 AMPost a comment
