City Paper: Election Coordinator Should Check Voter Rolls For Fake Social Security Numbers

The Friday Nashville City Paper has an editoral slamming state election coordinator Brook Thompson for refusing to check the state's voter database to see if there are voters who registered with fraudulent Social Security numbers.

As the City Paper reported and I blogged about yesterday, only numbers that start with a three-digit number from 001 through 772 are legitimate SSI numbers. Numbers that start with an eight are fake; numbers that start with a nine are either fake or are an IRS-issued Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, most of which are issued to non-citizes - including resident aliens, legal immigrants and illegal immigrants, none of whom are eligible to vote in our elections.

State Rep. Susan Lynn, R-Mt. Juliet, the legislator who asked Thompson to check the voter rolls for voters registered with ineligible or fraudulent SSI numbers says she has been asking Thompson for the information since August, to no avail.

The City Paper opines:

Tennessee’s election coordinator doesn't have a very good answer as to why he is not honoring a request from a sitting state legislator. State Rep. Susan Lynn, R-Mt. Juliet, has made three requests of Brook Thompson's office to research how many registered voters in Tennessee have social security numbers that resemble ITINs, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers. The numbers are given to immigrants regardless of their status for tax purposes.

Lynn in three separate letters has asked Thompson to simply tell her how many registered voters have social security numbers resembling ITINs in their number sequence. The request is a valid one as it could indicate Tennessee has registered voters who should not be.

Thompson has refused a request he should readily honor, saying he doesn't think he should release social security information. It is an arbitrary stance as all Lynn is seeking is a number of ITIN-type numbers tied to registered voters.

The City Paper is absolutely right - Brook Thompson's refusal is silly - Lynn doesn't want the Social Security numbers, she's merely asking for a count of how many registered voters used ITINs instead of SSI numbers when registering.

Why doesn't Tennessee Election Coordinator Brook Thompson want to know how many voters improperly used ITINs to register to vote?

I expect to have an update to this story later today...

Bill:

If it helps, tell Brook the SQL might look something like this:

Select table1.ssn from table1, table2 where table1.ssn = table2.ssn ORDER BY table1.ssn DESC

Valid SSN ranges are available to all under Freedom of Info Act at http://www.ssa.gov/employer/highgroup.txt. The issuing order is also available at http://www.ssa.gov/employer/ssnweb.htm. I use these ranges in my job as an internal auditor to verify valid SSNs of our employees. We've surfaced invalid SSNs before, & they generally turn out to be illegals. Its a shame the election commissioner hasn't known about this until now & its a sham nothing is done about it.

We use a software app called ACL to run the query against the data file. Ain't no big thang. The double speak of reasons for NOT doing it are laughable.
