Hard-Hitting Humor

The first ad from Tennessee Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Bryson manages to be humorous and hard-hitting at the same time, wryly nailing incumbent Gov. Phil Bredesen's myriad failures over the last four years, including kicking terminally ill people off TennCare, making Tennessee a magnet for illegal immigrants, letting high school graduation rates plummet and presiding over an administration plagued by a series of ethics scandals. Enjoy...

Bet you got a real kick out of that "Mecca" crack, B-Ho. A little off-handed shot at the Muslims. You and your boy Jimbo like that, huh?

The word "mecca" has been used for decades as a metaphor for some place being a center of attention and activity for a specific thing.

Use of the word actually honors the centrality of the city of Mecca to the Muslim faith, and how it draws millions of people to it. No other city is so central to a religion as is Mecca in the way Mecca is central to Islam, therefore it became the metaphor used by people the world over when describing a place that has become a magnet for a specific thing.

Wikipedia: "The term 'Mecca' has come into common usage metaphorically to mean any all-important site for any particular group of people, or a main attraction in a certain place or group of people that has a large turnout."

Usage example: Neyland Stadium is a mecca for Vols fans.

Bryson's use of the word mecca is perfectly acceptable and within the bounds of acceptable discourse.

Milton you sound like your getting kind of defensive? Whats a matter are you afraid the issues that Bryson brings up are going to screw your heroes(Bredesen,Naifeh,Junior)out of their dream jobs? LOL

"I fear we will not reach Mecca, O nomad, for the road that we are following leads to Turkestan."

Apologies to Sufi poet Saadi.

Ever notice how the Miltons of the world take a quick crack shot and never address the truth? They always fall back on name calling and insulting people. I think the ad is great!

I'm more surprised that there was enough money to even make an ad much less run it. The gop is only trying to provide care and feeding to the faithful during this cycle.
