Bus-ted: When Good Federales Go Bad

A drug bust along I-40 in Western Wlliamson County, Tennessee has nabbed a member of Mexico's federal police force traveling with a 15-pound bale of marijuana on a bus bound for Nashville. The officer was legally in the U.S. - but on a visitor's pass that forbade him from going farther than 25 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. He boarded the bus in Texas, and authorities believe he was bound for Nashville. The story isn't specific about which Mexican law enforcement agency the officer worked with, but if he's a federale, then it isn't the Mexican Federal Judicial Police because that agency was replaced in 2002 by the new Federal Agency of Investigation due to corruption problems. The new agency was created to deal with drug and corruption problems in Mexico.

And apparently it is working very well...

The story in the Saturday Tennessean says agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security were called, and they subsequently took custody of five other passengers on the bus who werein the country illegally. The story doesn't say if they were traveling with the drug-trafficking federale...

The day they laid poor Pancho low, Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go, there ain't nobody knows
A few gray Federales say, they could've had him any day
They only let him go so long, out of kindness I suppose...

- Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Pancho and Lefty

Well, there's plenty more where that came from. (Hope that's true for Willie, too.)

When I was reading this story, all I could think of was the song 'Pancho and Lefty.' Great song.

I would be remiss as a Nashville writer, however, if I didn't mention Pancho and Lefty was actually written by the great Townes Van Zandt, not by Willie. Willie and Merle had the biggest hit of this song, though.

Try finding Townes on a jukebox in this city. The only place I've ever found is H. Cue's on 21st. They've got the soundtrack to the Big Lebowski on it and him doing a cover of "Dead Flowers" that I never noticed in the movie.

Thankfully the federales have finally decided to confront the scandalous amounts of Mexican ditch weed that has illegally immigrated here.
