What's In It For Phil?

By Rick Forman

Supposedly Bredesen is all for the free market and capitalism.

Then why does he keep pushing corporatism/fascist ideas like this alliance with Wal-Mart?

What would be the carrot for Walmart to enter into this alliance? Possibly an assurance from the governor he would not support any legislation that would directly affect Wally World? Such as health insurance regulations?

So what's in it for Phil other than a political feel good campaign issue at taxpayer expense? Bredesen covers my question as well.

"You can't do anything without some criticisms," Bredesen said. "But I certainly think that when you have an employer of that size, who has that many good jobs that they are saying need to be filled, we need to respond to that."

OK Phil, with 122 Wal-Mart facilities in Tennessee, we are not looking at a major impact to the state's job market nor economy. This is just another bullet on Bredesen's campaign list. Of cousre to be funded by we the taxpayers.

A national education list I'm on picked this up this morning. They can't, for the life of them, figure out why this would even be considered. I came to the same conclusion you did--it's election season.

I wonder if Phil, Jr. came home and announced he was managing the local Wal-Mart if Papa would still consider it to be a 'good job'.

Kay,

I kind of doubt "Phil Jr." will be going to a community college...however many Tennesseans do, and when they get out an associates degree isn't exactly a guarantee of a good job. I would be extremely weary of a governmental relationship with Wal-Mart, however, it could be a good job opportunity for students who can't afford to go to a 4 year college.

As for this claim that this is simply an election year ploy...who's vote is this gonna get? The truth is many Governors have been meeting with Walmart to discuss ideas on how the states and Walmart (the largest employer in the country) can work together to have a mutually benificial relationship. It just so happens he met with them in 2006. Bredesen has 4 more years to be Governor, and he isn't going to stop working to make the state better simply to throw attention to a Republican who can barely get a majority of Republicans to support him.
