The Ninth Planet

pluto.jpgAccording to the International Astronomical Union, Pluto is not a planet, based on the IAU's new definition of a planet:

A planet is a celestial body that is in orbit around the Sun has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.
Hmm. That sounds like the blogopshere.

The blogosphere is a celestial body composed mostly of hot air and gas. It is round - they don't call it the blogosphere for nothing. It has overcome rigid bodies such as the mainstream media, It orbits the sun, once every 365 1/4 days. And it has achieved self-importance, which sounds a lot like self-gravity. Technorati now tracks some 52 million blogs within the b'sphere, and more media, readers and new bloggers are plugging into it every day.

Meanwhile, the debate over Pluto and the IAU's definition of a planet goes on and on. Kind of like the "Are blogs journalism?" debate...
