Pepsi's New Anti-American CEO

Pepsico has a new CEO, India-born Indra Nooyi. Today's press coverage of her appointment to run Pepsico doesn't mention it, but some of us recall her deeply offensive anti-American speech to the MBA grads at Columbia Business School back in May 2005. I had two brief posts on it (click here). For more on her speech see Powerline circa 2005, Powerline today, and Scott Johnson's excellent article in the Weekly Standard in June 2005.

Pepsico's brands include Pepsi, Aquafina, Gatorade, Tropicana, Frito-Lay, Quaker, Mountain Dew, MUG root beer, SoBe, Lipton, Sierra Mist, and more. Many, many more. A boycott of all Pepsico brands would be impossible and probably pointless, but I won' t be purchasing any more Pepsi colas any time soon.

Update: Marketing consultant Mike Smock is baffled by Pepsico's selection of Nooyi, noting that her anti-American comments may well "alienate at least half of their American customer base." Says Smock: "Looks like PepsiCo is positioning to become the beverage of choice for all liberals."

Update: A Reuters report mentions the controversy over Nooyi's comments.

Wow, a Southerner who drinks Pepsi...go figure.

Do you know how to read?

First, check my "about me" link - I was born and raised in the Philadelphia suburbs. Second, if you follow the links to my past postings re Nooyi, you'll find that I prefer Coke.

In the past I've bought Pepsi when Coke wasn't available, but I'm going to do less of that now.

If you aren't drinking Pepsi any more, try RC Cola!

Sorry Bill, I didn't know it was such a sore subject...my bad.

Dang. Do you know how to not be rude? I'd have thought that vacation would have mellowed you out a bit.

Hi Bill,

We share your thoughts and blogged it here

Other than the one commencement address you've taken offense to (or perhaps her apologies for the confusion her metaphor made) what actions or statements would you base your prejudice against her?

WOW!!!!!!!!! I don't think you got enough rest on your vacation. PEPSI/COKE is really a tender topic. Maybe you are still just mad about getting fired from Belmont.

Pepsi has more sugar and caffeine than Coke has. If you like a really fast heartbeat, guzzle Pepsi. Okay, I've done enough for my friends at Atlanta headquarters.

I would expect the only people who should be concerned are the stockholders. Could be the board chose her because of her controversy. Free publicity gets the name up in lights.

Maybe they see an opprotunity to gain international sales in countries that are anti-U.S. Coca-Cola is frowned upon as captialist. And don't forget the recent spat of discrimination suits against Coke. Could be Pepsi is trying to show how "diverse" they are.

From the Pepsico's website:
"PepsiCo's responsiblility is to continually improve all aspects of the world in which we operate - environmnet, social, economic - creating a better tomorrow than today."

Umm, no. PepsiCo's responsibilty is to provide a return to the investors not another United Way.
