« An Open Letter to Bob Corker | Main | 70%, Seven O, Setenta for no new taxes in Blount and Campbell Counties » August 5, 2006Maury County CommissionBy Ben Cunningham Other newcomers include John Goodloe, principal of Spring Hill Elementary School; Felicia A. McClain, an Educational Insights employee; Ty Cobb, a Columbia firefighter; Arch Patterson, a former commissioner; Richard Miller, a Columbia police officer; retiree R. Lee Dugger; Tommy Wolaver, Mt. Pleasant High School principal; retiree Bob Farmer; and Gwynne Evans, a teacher at Spring Hill High School. Five of the new county commissioners listed in this paragraph are local government employees. Will be very interesting to see how they vote on county tax increases. Should they recuse themselves when voting on tax increases that will directly affect their own salaries? Posted in TN Tax and Budget News

Ben, I live in Maury County, and I feel county employees and their spouses should be prohibited from serving on the county commission. Conflicts of interest are there. This was something of an issue in this recent election, but as you can see, more county employees were elected to the commission. One county employee who did not run for re-election to the commission said he was uncomfortable with the conflicts of interest that arose during his service; said he did not think that would be a problem but it turned out it was. If I made an exception to the rule I'd like to see here, it would be to allow a law enforcement officer to serve on the commission, elected by the county as a whole.
