« Leftist Blogger Jailed For Refusing to Provide Video to Grand Jury | Main | Vote for Ed! » August 3, 2006If He Wasn't Here, His Victim Wouldn't Be DeadA report in today's today's Nashville City Paper on a traffic crash that killed a Nashville man says this: ...the man charged with vehicular homicide, drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident is believed by authorities to be an illegal immigrant. If he is, then that's the third death-by-illegal-immigrant-motorist in Tennessee in the last two months. In June, Gustavo Garcia Reyes, an illegal immigrant in the country despite repeated arrests for driving under the influence and other crimes, smashed his vehicle into that of a Wilson County couple, killing both. It's time Tennessee's government take a hard look at its current policies across the board, which may be continuing to make Tennessee a magnet for illegal immigrants. Passing the buck to the feds - as Gov. Phil Bredesen did after the Reyes crash - is no longer sufficient. Posted in Immigration

Is there any particular reason these people are continually referred to as "illegal immigrants" rather than the correct description which is "illegal aliens"? Posted by: "John Galt" at August 3, 2006 9:03 AMI have tried for years to get some attorney to sue those in charge of prosecuting Illegals for not enforcing their sworn oath to support laws. Seems simple to this TN Hillbilly, but no takers. Posted by: Jack Morgan at August 3, 2006 9:49 AMYes, they are referred to as "illegal immigrants" because that is the correct description. What is illegal about them is that they illegally immigrated; not that they are illegally alien. Posted by: George Rand at August 3, 2006 10:12 AMAccording to the City Paper he was already deported once. This problem needs to be fixed at the border level, and it could be if it wasn't for the House obstructionists. The President and Senate already have a plan worked out, unfortunately the House would rather put politics ahead of security. Posted by: Sean Braisted at August 3, 2006 12:56 PMThanks so much for clearing that up for me, Mr. Rand. Many consider an "immigrant" a person who follows the rules and enters the country legally but you lump everyone in the same group even though the illegals are law breakers upon stepping across our border illegally, are they not? Posted by: "John Galt" at August 3, 2006 1:07 PM"Illegal alien" is the term used in federal law and by federal law enforcement. You know, we are legion, those of us with loved ones dead or maimed by illegal aliens, but I said long ago that nothing will be done in Tennessee until the invaders start killing off the country music community or the governor's family. That is happening, to the country music community anyway. Welcome to the club. The Sad Club. My daughter is permanently damaged, and the untraceable illegal at fault is still on the loose. Local and state law enforcement officers must be empowered and ordered to enforce federal immigration laws, which under federal law they already have the authority to enforce. Local and state officers are the eyes and ears that DHS/ICE cannot be. They are the severed link in the enforcement chain, and that gap imperils us all. Posted by: Donna Locke at August 3, 2006 3:31 PMI refer to them as illegal foreign nationals because they are citizens of a foreign country on U.S. soil illegally. While the focus has been on the southern border, there are several hundred thousand illegal foreign nationals who chose to overstay their visas intentionally and there is no effort by Jorge Boosh to find out who or where they are. These criminals are a greater security threat than illegal Mexican nationals. Especially after the ports of entry failed the test of forged IDs. Bryson's campaign needs to focus on methods to discourage these foreign nationals from settling in Tennessee and point out Bredesen's 4 years of inaction. Despite what all of the apologists and appeasers claim, states can and do have the authority to defend their citizenry from foreign invasion. But our legislature is too involved in do nothing legislation like eminent domain or unethical status quo. Posted by: Rick Forman at August 3, 2006 8:41 PMPost a comment
