« A Trend | Main | Qualifacts Update: Damage Control » July 10, 2006Russia Nails Islamist Terrorist Who Lead Beslan MassacreIt's party time! Russia's most-wanted terrorist - Shamil Basayev, who lead that raid on the elementary school in Beslan in 2004 in which 331 people, half of them children, were killed, is dead - killed by Russian special forces as he was planning an attack to coincide with Russia hosting the G8 summit of world leaders this weekend. The bad news: The CNN report doesn't mention that Basayev's Islamist ties until the 19th paragraph of the story, which reveals that Baseyev "was helped by Islamic groups including the Taliban in Afghanistan." Hmm. The Taliban harbored al Qaeda. You think maybe they helped Baseyev? But of course they did! Basayev didn't just get help from Islamist terror groups - he WAS an Islamist terror leader. Oh well. Paragraph 19 is better than nothing - the Associated Press story didn't mention Baseyev's Islamist ties at all . Amazing, Reuters - which prefers not to call Islamist terrorists "terrorists," calls Baseyev's group "Islamist militants" in the third paragraph. Posted in War on Terror

While eliminating Basayev is most definitely a good thing. I'm going to play the "Question the timing" card on this one. Very little international play, outside of the London Times, has been given to Putin arresting a democratically elected official in a province so he can seize/nationalize their oil just like he did with Gazprom so they can manipulate energy markets. While the animating child of democracy is still being pursued in former Soviet satellites, it's been ruled dead by accidental drowning in Russia Proper and they need to be removed from the G-8. The only question is how long the US is going to ignore the body. A terrorist is a terrorist is a terrorist. Posted by: Josh at July 10, 2006 3:43 PMPost a comment
