In Praise of Gridlock

Blake Wylie, guest-blogging over at Nashville is Talking, is longing for gridlock in Washington DC, and recalling the 1995 government shut-down fondly. I was in Peterborough, N.H., on a business trip on the day the federal government shutdown began, preparing to drive the rental car back to Boston's Logan Airport for a flight home. I remember joking with my colleague that we couldn't take the Interstate, a federal highway, back to the airport because the government was shut down, so the road must be out of service. It wasn't, of course. Nor was much else. The much-hyped "government shut down" was a non-event for most Americans. We ought to do it more often, and for longer periods of time.

Blake longs for divided government again, so here are my questions: Would it be better, for advancing the principles of conservative government, to have a Republican president and Democrats in control of one or both houses of Congress, or to have a Democrat president and Republicans in control of on or both houses of Congress?

That's kind of a hard call. The 80's were great with Reagan as President, but we had a Democrat Congress. On the other hand, the late 90's were when we had a Republican Congress and a Democrat President.

Of course, if we had someone as good as Reagan now (a great idealist who has excellent Conservative principles), I'm sure that he would be able to reign in Congress no matter who controlled it.
