Closing Credits for Franklin Cinema?

The Tennessean reports that the Franklin Cinema in downtown Franklin might close because the theater owners can't afford the rising rents for real estate in the town's historic district. My wife and I dropped by the Franklin Cinema a few weeks ago to see a movie. The place, while still popular, is badly in need of a good cleaning and some renovation. The only way I see it surviving - short of it becoming a non-profit art house theater relying on fundraising to subsidize it, a la Nashville's Belcourt Theatre - is for its current or owners to invest heavily and make it a truly posh place to see a first-run movie. A movie theater with the menu, service and ambience of a fine restaurant, perhaps.

We love it. It is a great palce to take kids or your family. Who cares if it isn't plush. I think that is why so many people love it and it continues to stay so busy. When some of the soldiers from Ft. Campbell came for the rodeo parade last year the 1st Sgt said, "You can really get beer and pizza"? I mean, what more do you need?

Thoughts of the Franklin Cinema closing in December is sad. I've lived in Franklin for 16 years, not having the downtown theater to see a movie will be a shame. Is it modern like the Cool-springs theatres, NO, who cares it is clean an historic building that needs to be kept open. Would be great if Tim McGraw would take it over, has anyone asked???

It's a great movie theatre. I would hate to see it go. It is such an important part of the Franklin historic district. Dinner and a movie all right there with the restaurants around it. I'd much rather see a movie in the Franklin Cinema than the bigger, posh, overcrowded and overpriced theatres. It's an icon that should not be forced to shut it's doors.
