Surging Surplus Update

The Nashville City Paper reports on how the Bredesen administration and some lawmakers are rushing to spend the state's surging tax revenue surplus. No mention of the surplus in today's Tennessean, at least online. Subscription-only NashvillePost.com has a story here, though I don't know what it says because I don't have a subscription. The Associated Press story is running in the Knoxville News Sentinel and Memphis Commercial-Appeal today. The CA's version is longer, and has a sidebar about the impending demise of legislation to lower the state's sales tax on food by raising the cigarette tax. No mention of any legislators proposing to use the surging revenue surplus to lower the sales tax on food...

May 5 Update: No story in The Tennessean yet. I'm baffled as to why The Tennessean is the only major newspaper in the state to not report on the state government's surging revenue surplus - especially as it underscores and highlights a major difference between the Democratic incumbent governor and the leading Republican challenger.

Comments

A surging surplus is bad news for the pro-income-tax lobby, so I wouldn't imagine you'll hear much about it in the Old Media.

Additionally, there is little chance any tax - sales or otherwise - will come back down once the general public gets used to paying the increased rate.
