Kay Brooks Update

The Tennessean covers the "controversy" over the selection of home-schooling mom Kay Brooks to fill a seat on the Nashville school board left vacant by a resignation. The controversy is this: the public school education establishment wanted someone from within its ranks to fill the seat, but Brooks has home-schooled all four of her children. The public school establishment wanted one of its own because it doesn't want to be challenged by people who think differently about education. The paper calls Brooks "outspoken," but fails to tell readers of her blog or her new website focused on the school board. Brooks, by the way, wrote a handful of posts as a guest writer here at BillHobbs.com back in November. You can find them here.

Surely you cannot know what "the public school establishment" wants. How do you know that "it doesn't want to be challenged by people who think differently about education"?

In my opinion, the controversy is this: Brooks' failure to address her constituents at a forum intended specifically for that. Also, the lining up of votes looks very suspicious and is hardly the "transparency" you so very often tout on this very web site. Reducing everyone's criticisms of Kay Brooks to the fact that she isn't part of the "establishment" does everyone involved a disservice. Sure, that is some people's complaint, but many others of us who live in Brooks' district (like myself and my partner) have other, very legitimate concerns.

Thanks for pointing out the blog and website, Bill. I've also got an e-mail list going MNPSDistrict5

I see Brooks couldn't even be bothered to repsond to a constituent that lives in her district on a blog. Nice.

You live on a blog? How does that work?

Heh.

Kay Brooks is raising four children. And she's running for the school board seat. I imagine she's busy. She needs to communicate with all of the people of her district, not just one resident who has already come out against her. I don't think she's scanning the blogosphere to find your comments and respond to them, Brittney.

Er, I commented right above where she commented. That is hardly scanning the internets, Bill.

Kay Brooks is raising four children. And she's running for the school board seat. I imagine she's busy.

She didn't have time to come to the forum. She didn't have time to respond to allegations of back door dealings. Will she have time to serve well if she's so tied up? If she is not going to respond on blogs, when WILL she respond?

I guess I'll have to wait until I see her and ask her my laundry list of questions face to face at the Metro school board meeting on Tuesday, May 23. I look forward to it.

Just contact her via email.
